Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills is an affluent neighborhood in Los Angeles County that is surrounded by the city of L.A.  Home to some of California's wealthiest residents and most glamorous homes, Beverly Hills has been depicted in numerous films, television shows and books, and the 90210 zip code is famous around the world for representing luxury and style. Beverly Hills is bordered on the northwest by the Los Angeles neighborhood of Bel Air and the Santa Monica Mountains, on the east by West Hollywood and the Fairfax District of Los Angeles, and on the south by Beverlywood. The area's Platinum Triangle of affluent neighborhoods is formed by Beverly Hills and the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Bel Air and Holmby Hills.

The area where Beverly Hills is located was first settled in 1828 by Maria Rita Valdez Villa, the widow of a Spanish soldier, was a granddaughter of Luis Quintero who was one of the original settlers of Los Angeles.  Maria Rita, an early California feminist icon, built an adobe ranch house near the intersection of present day Sunset Boulevard and Alpine Drive. The city's first streets, Rodeo, Canon, Crescent, Carmelita, Elevado and Lomitas were constructed in 1907.  The landmark Beverly Hills Hotel was built in 1912 and visitors drawn by the hotel were inclined to purchase land in Beverly Hills, and by 1914 the subdivision had a high enough population to incorporate as an independent city and was incorporated in 1914.  By the late 1920's and 1930's the area had become home to a good number of the top movie stars of the Golden Era of film.  In the post World War II years, Beverly Hills continued to develop as one of the most glamorous places in the world to live, eat, play and, especially, shop. The Golden Triangle, with Rodeo Drive at its center, was built and marketed to the rest of the world as the shopping destination of a lifetime. Many other glamorous hotels opened, notably the Beverly Wilshire, attracting visitors from all over the world.

While there are many ultra-wealthy residents of Beverly Hills, many people are surprised to learn there is a sizable population and working singles, families and middle class professionals.  In fact, renters, not homeowners, are the majority and renter-occupied housing units comprise 56.6 percent of the city's housing stock.  In recent years many of the neighborhood's historic apartment buildings have undergone major renovation and restoration and have become highly sought after.  Rodeo, Beverly, and Canon Drives all recently underwent construction to widen the sidewalks and beautify the streets and new construction has also just been completed that added more parking for visitors to the famed shopping area.

In addition to it's famous homes and fine dining and shopping, Beverly Hills is also home to numerous parks and gardens including Will Rogers Memorial Park, Beverly Gardens Park and Virginia Robinson GardensCedars-Sinai, one of the most respected medical facilities in the world, is located nearby and Beverly Hills has many top rated schools including Beverly Hills High, Beverly Hills Preparatory School, Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy, Emanuel Academy of Beverly Hills, and Page Private School.
