Mar Vista

Mar Vista

Mar Vista is located south of Santa Monica and north of Culver City.  It is west of the 405 freeway and east of Venice.  The name Mar Vista means "sea view" in Spanish and the cool ocean can be felt in Mar Vista. From Mar Vista Hill you can see the ocean and from the north direction you can see the Getty Museum, the Hollywood Hills and on a clear day to the east the Hollywood sign.  In March, 2013, Los Angeles magazine voted Mar Vista as the best neighborhood in L.A. for people in their 40's.

The majority of Mar Vista homes were built toward the end of WWII and post WWII.  Today, they are what we would call California bungalows.  However, due to our changing life styles many homeowners over the years expanded the homes to include a family room, den or another bedroom and bathroom.  There are many artists of all sorts who call Mar Vista home as well as students from nearby UCLA and long-time homeowners who have successfully led multiple efforts to keep Mar Vista one of the least over-populated areas in Los Angeles.  Mar Vista is also home to some of the most valuable land in Los Angeles.

As with many Los Angeles neighborhoods, the actual geographic area has grown or better said been "stretched" by people trying to describe parts of the vast LA sprawl. Other descriptions, perhaps not originating from Angelenos, are those such as the term "ADJACENT"  referring to the area or neighborhood name. An example of the eclectic flavor of the area is that the southern area of Mar Vista south of Washington Blvd and just east of Lincoln Blvd is sometimes called Marina Del Rey Adjacent.

Mar Vista has a Sunday Farmer's Market from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m at Grandview Blvd between Venice Blvd and Pacific Ave. Parking is available at the post office.  Also noteworthy is the Mar Vista Recreation Center which has an auditorium, barbecue pits, an unlighted baseball diamond, lighted indoor basketball courts, lighted outdoor basketball courts, a children's play area, an indoor gymnasium without weights, an outdoor roller hockey rink, picnic tables, a lighted tennis court, an outdoor pool and a lighted volleyball court.
